Installation
Nothing appeared to happen when I tried to download the software. What’s wrong?
Be sure that you checked the checkbox that indicates that you accept the terms and conditions we specify. If the box is left unchecked, nothing will happen. What can I expect to find in the download file?
Do I need to execute the ClassInHandAgent.exe file as part of the installation?
After executing the download file, you should navigate to c:\program files\ClassInHand where you will find the following files:
- ClassInHandAgent.exe (the presentation agent that goes on your computer)
- CIHSetup.exe (the executable file that puts the application on your PocketPC)
- readme.txt (read this before clicking on the CIHSetup executable!)
No. Just put it in a convenient location, like on your desktop or in the folder where you usually store your PowerPoint presentations. You will need to execute this agent only when you are using the ClassInHandTM software to control a PowerPoint presentation from your PocketPC.How will I access the ClassInHandTM software once the installation is complete?
It will appear on the Start Menu on your PocketPC.I tried to download the software to a PocketPC device but it would not run. Are there specific requirements for the device?
Yes. The device must have a StrongARM or Xscale processor running at 207mhz or faster, and at least 32mb of RAM. For more details, follow the Technical Specifications link.Web Server
The IP address of my PocketPC does not show on the Web Server screen.
A couple of things could cause this problem:
- Your device may not have received an IP address yet from the DHCP server. Try using IE to browse to a web site you haven't visited before to make sure you have an Internet connection.
- If you can downloaded the software prior to September of 2003, you may want to download the current version, in which the strategy for displaying the IP address has been changed.
An IP address shows on my webserver screen but I cannot connect to the ClassInHand server from another device.
Make sure the IP address you see on the webserver screen is an address that is in range for your wireless network. If you see 127.0.0.1, you do not have an IP address from your DHCP server. Some other addresses also represent a "no connection" state. Check with your technical support staff to see what your IP address should look like.My PocketPC has a valid IP address shows but my student cannot connect to the ClassInHand server.
Check with your networking support staff to see whether there are network security settings or topology issues such as subnetting that would preclude traffic between your POcketPC and students' devices.PowerPoint Feature
My PocketPC won't connect to the Agent on my computer. It just times out.
Be sure to disable any firewall that is running on the presentation computer. If this does not solve the problem, consult your networking technical support staff to find out whether there are other network configuration issues preventing this connection. How does the PocketPC communicate with the computer on which my presentation resides?
The communication is through your wireless network, using the specific ip addresses of the PocketPC and the computer on which your presentation resides. The ClassInHandTM software shows you both of these ip addresses each time you use it. The computer can be connected to your network via either wired or wireless connection; the PocketPC of course requires wireless connectivity.Do I have to take along my own computer containing my presentation and the Agent file in order to use the ClassInHandTM software for controlling a presentation?
No, you can copy both your presentation and the Agent's .exe file to floppy or cd and leave your own computer behind. You should copy the Agent file to the desktop of the computer you will be using for your presentation rather than executing it from the floppy or cd. The Agent will allow you to browse the hard drive, the floppy drive, or the cd drive to find and run your presentation.Other Issues
When I'm using the Quizzing feature and show my students the results, the Agent box shows on top of my PowerPoint slide when I close the quiz results screen.
This happens when you are using a combination of Windows98 and OfficeXP, due to changes in the way the z-order is handled between Windows98 and Windows2000. You will need to go to your computer and click on the slide to send the Agent to the background. (or upgrade to Windows 2000 or Windows XP!)
